Medical illustrations for Patient Education Videos
In collaboration with three Mass General Brigham breast radiology fellows, my team and I created two “what to expect” videos for patients undergoing stereotactic and ultrasound biopsies. These videos contributed to their research project that aimed to measure the effect of educational videos on patient anxiety. For this study, 100 patients will watch these videos on an iPad before their procedure and fill out a feedback form after.
my Role:
Observed and live-sketched stereotactic and ultrasound biopsy procedures to understand patients’ experiences and questions
Researched biopsy procedure videos from peer institutions
Collaborated closely with the breast radiologist for medical accuracy and consultation on illustration decisions
Created the graphics in Adobe Illustrator for export to After Effects
Storyboarded the scenes and directions for animations
Ultrasound Biopsy Animation
Stereotactic Biopsy Animation
equity & Inclusion in our process
Research
Procedure observation with patient consent
Interviews with radiologists and radiology technicians
Peer-institution analysis of patient educational content
Art Direction
Emphasize humanizing the patient over depicting an abstract, cartoonish avatar
Show what the patient sees instead of an internal body view
Prioritize diversity and Inclusion in all characters shown
Create flat, simplified environments that incorporate only relevant machines and instruments with soft, muted, and soothing colors
Accessibility
Include closed-captions for all videos
Plain language review for all text and dialogue
Language translations in Spanish, Mandarin, Arabic, Haitian Creole, Portuguese, and Russian
Consider the range of our patients’ digital literacy and focus on the impactful distribution channels
